Cyprus Work Permit

If you are EU member you should know that you do not require work permit in Cyprus from 1 st of May 2004, when Cyprus joined the EU. Although, if you wish to be employed in a professional capacity, such as an accountant, lawyer or doctor, you should pass written exam in Greek.

Entering Cyprus

EU citizens are allowed to enter Cyprus with their passports only. They do not need work permit and they can stay in Cyprus for up to 90 days. If you found a work, most of the employers will arrange your work permit, though it is difficult procedure and it will take some time.

Non-EU citizens should have Work Permit before they travel to Cyprus. They should apply for a Work permit prior to their visit and the Ministry of Labour in Cyprus should ensure that no Cypriot or EU citizen can do the job applied for.

There are two types of Work Permits in Cyprus:

1. Executive, which refers to company directors, managers and partners;

2. Non-executive type that include professional, technical, administrative and clerical stuff.

How to Issue a Work Permit

An intended employer should issue an application for work permit to the Civil Registry and Migration Department through the District Aliens and Immigration Branch of the Police.

The application should include work contract, that has stamp from the Department of Labour of the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance. The Ministry of Labour should ensure that there are no avalable cypriots for this job position.
