Food in Cyprus is one of the reasons that the quality of living in Cyprus is maintained at such high standards. Cyprus cuisine is even though influenced by many neighbouring countries, is based of the Mediterranean diet. Thus Cypriot traditional meals are always accompanied with bread, a vegetable salad, perhaps yogurt, water, freshly squeezed juice or wine for a drink and fruits for dessert. Lots of fresh lemon is squeezed over several dishes, while various herbs and spices like mint, thyme, oregano, cumin, coriander, cinnamon, roka, parsley and celery, add taste and liven up each dish. Despite the fact that Cypriots enjoy to taste other countries’ cuisine, the majority of the population stick to the Mediterranean diet.
